The Bloodstar Cross has bloomed in the night sky once more.
Two centuries earlier the Elrin dynasty collapsed beneath its impassive, blood-red light. The final Elrin king went mad, the Calamity destroyed countless lives, and the ancient religions were disbanded. In their place the new Belrase ruler raised a nation of logic and science that denounced the old ways. Then the star vanished and the world continued, the stories of mages and gods drifting into the past to be remembered only as the lies of conmen.
Joss Elrin is the last heir of that ancient dynasty, living as a political prisoner within the royal palace. There, to be an Elrin is to be hated. Despite the open hostility of his peers Joss studies hard, obeys his superiors, and manages to befriend the impetuous young Belrase king. No one is more surprised than Joss when the king announces that he will serve the throne as royal advisor, the first official post any Elrin has held in generations.
But the Bloodstar Cross is a herald of bloody change. Civil unrest is spreading through the country, and in the south a new religion follows a so-called miracle worker. When events force Joss to flee the palace, he learns the ancient stories were not all wrong, and that long-forgotten evils are beginning to stir. Evils, as his luck would have it, that only an Elrin can stop.
